Lessons learned from integrating scientific libraries within a plugin-based architecture
Designing interoperable software is critical to boosting scientific productivity in research applications, especially when exposed through flexible interfaces and plugin frameworks. Such scalable applications with complex dependency chains require rigorous source management, continuous testing and flexible deployment processes. The lessons learned during the development of a VisIt-MOAB plugin has led us to question certain library design choices, and emphasized the need for creating better processes that are resilient to software interface and lifecycle changes.
